What is Safety Data Sheet?

Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) contains information on ill- effects of exposure to chemicals and other potentially dangerous substances alongside workplace safety while handling chemical substances. The SDS is issued to all workplaces involving the use of potentially dangerous substances for creation of safe working places, environmental protection and minimizing the possibility of hazardous events at workplaces. Every workplace is expected to have an SDS/MSDS reviewed and updated once in every two years

The SDS also offers information as mandated by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations (COSHH) and issues guidelines on material data safety sheet, physical and chemical nature of substances, level of carcinogenicity, health impacts, exposure limits, etc.

SDS are different for most countries and therefore, the United Nations (U.N) issued Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for establishing common standards. The GHS refers to the use of a common method of classifying and labelling of hazardous chemicals, including Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
